For 12 months my daily walk lead me across the Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen. Without any real interest in the place or because I had to – I just lived nearby.
There is a special tranquility of this beautiful castle and its square, which has been the scene for so many traditions through Danish history. But what caught my interest, was when the square got invaded by tourists – some very determined to register their visit. Their proof of visit.
I became aware of the ‘photographic ritual’ performed by the visitors; a weird mix of Tai Chi and a gymnastic exercise – struggeling to get the right photographic angle without any concern for their own appearance.
The photographing tourists – doing their poses – became a phenomenon far more interesting than the surroundings they stood in.
